System Description
The model is configured for the North and Equatorial Pacific region using HYCOM v2.1.16. The computational domain extends from 98°E to 78°W and 20°S to 65.8°N and the computations are carried out on a mercator grid with 1/12° equatorial resolution (2294 x 1362 grid points, 6.5 km spacing on average). There are 20 vertical layers (see blkdat.input). Bathymetry is derived from a quality controled ETOPO 2.5 dataset. Surface forcing is from 6 hourly ECMWF operational product and includes wind stress, wind speed, heat flux (calculated using bulk formula) and precipitation. The model is outfitted with a 3° buffer zone in the south and east boundaries where temperature and salinity is relaxed to climatological T and S. Boundaries are closed along 20°S, in the Indonesian throughflow region and in the Bearing Strait. FCT2 is used for advection. For details on the advection scheme, mixing etc. see blkdat.input.
NOTE: We cannot serve out ECMWF forcing data. Per our agreement with ECMWF, we cannot distribute their forcing outside of our research group. Please contact ECMWF for additional information.
Data Assimilation
There is no data assimilation in this model run.
Operational Details
The model was run for the time period 1991-2003 and the data are archived at NAVOCEANO. Monthly means from this data is available via servers located at the Center For Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS), Florida State University (FSU). The HYCOM format archive files are converted to CF 1.0 compliant NetCDF files using standard HYCOM post-processing package. These files contain diagnostic output at standard Levitus depth levels for several variables including: currents, temperature and salinity.
